For the sake of discussion since Terengganu MB mentioned, let's discuss if what he said is true and what Sixers' said is true!
As mentioned by Ahmad Said, Mercedes has a lower long term maintenance costs, lower consumption, more presentable, except with a higher initial purchasing costs. I doubt Ahmad Said has done enough study on the Mercedes cars, as well as most continental cars.
Most if not all conti cars are using recycleable parts, and a lot of wear and tear parts need to be changed or serviced at a fixed interval, whereas Proton Perdana is using a lower costs parts, long lasting (as claimed) parts, and only changed when broke down. So the first point is Mercedes looks to have lower maintenance costs is not correct.
Secondly fuel consumption for Mercedes is lower than Proton Perdana: I have to agree with this statement because after so many of my friends who's driven a Proton Perdana before, one of the main reason they let got their car because of the high consumption. One full tank can barely lasted 400 kms (0.14L/km), as compare to Mercedes's between 600 kms to 700kms (0.11L/km).
Thirdly, I believe the car purchased will not be used for more than 5 years, as it's the standard practice of changing car at 5 years interval. So it means after 5 years state government need to folk out similar amount to purchase new cars, as the old ones will be sold off. The depreciation for Mercedes is higher compare to Proton Perdana simply because of its value in term of money. Maybe in term of percentage Proton Perdana will be higher.
Fourthly, it all depends on how the car is being driven. If a Proton Perdana's gearbox could be damaged within 4 years, the driving style of the driver must be questioned. I still believe no matter how bad the quality of the car, gearbox should last more than 4 years.
Fifth, the amount claimed for those repairs is very suspecious because even changed of gearbox twice, it would not runs the bills up to what's being shown. It would be very stupid of them repairing the car being what is worth for them. It would be better to scrap them off than repairing them! Do not forget that Mercedes's wear and tear parts don't come cheap as well. Most conti cars will undergo major parts replacement between year 5 and year 7, and these are the must-change parts because most of them are sensors.
Last but not least, it's a slap in the face for Proton, the government's much supported national car manufacturer. In saying what he said, not only the reputation is in jeoperdy, but it also shows the distrusting of the own government representatives against the national car. So how could we expect foreigners to have confidence in our product! Now Proton will have to find whatever way to prove Ahmad Said's wrong facts, and deep down we know it's of the worst quality possible Proton's product. Ahmad Said should just tell the public that the purchase of Mercedes Benz E200K is because it looks more classy and presentable as MBs, MPs, and it's way far class above Proton Perdana. I think people wouldn't feel so angry if he say so because it's the truth!
